No hinge, no spring, no plastic tray to clip the tissues under. Four magnets and one block of walnut, in two halves of exactly the same height.

Two parts, four magnets

The magnets sit flush in the rim, so the lid drops on and pulls itself square without you lining it up. Both ends of the opening are radiused rather than cut square — that is the difference between a sheet that lifts out whole and one that tears across the corner.

• FAS grade American black walnut — FAS is the highest grade the American hardwood rules recognise: the cleanest, widest and longest boards cut from the log
• Solid throughout — never veneer, never a wood-effect print
• Finished in wood wax oil, not lacquer
• Grain and colour vary from piece to piece

Looking after it

• Wipe with a dry or barely damp cloth
• Keep it off the wet edge of a basin and out of standing water
• Out of direct sun, away from a radiator
