If you have opened a drawer and found a silver chain gone grey after months of doing nothing, here is the short answer: tarnish is a chemical reaction between the metal and sulfur compounds in the air, and humidity only sets the speed. Preventing it in storage comes down to three things — get the sulfur sources out of the enclosure, keep the air under roughly 50% relative humidity, and put every piece away clean and dry. The advice you will read most often is to seal everything airtight. For part of your collection that is the wrong move, and for a surprising number of people the sulfur source is already sitting inside the jewelry box.
Why does my jewelry tarnish even in a jewelry box?
Because a jewelry box is not an airtight barrier, and is often a sulfur source itself. Tarnish on silver is silver sulphide. It starts as a yellow or pink cast, moves to brown, then dark grey, then black, and the metal loses its sheen along the way. That is the real cost, and it compounds. Every polish takes metal. On solid sterling you have material to spare. On gold-plated, vermeil and gold-filled pieces you do not — the plating is measured in microns, and repeated polishing is how a plated chain goes patchy at the clasp and along the high spots. The tarnish itself is reversible. The polishing you do to fix it is not.
Humidity is the accelerator rather than the cause. Analysis published in the Journal of the American Institute for Conservation puts the practical ceiling for silver storage at around 50% relative humidity. Above that, ordinary dust settled on a surface starts absorbing moisture and corroding the metal underneath it — which is why an undisturbed piece in a damp room can develop spotting rather than an even film.
What can you put in a jewelry box to keep silver from tarnishing?
Anti-tarnish strips, activated charcoal cloth, or silver-impregnated cotton bags — all absorb sulfur gases before the metal does. They prevent rather than remove, and they are consumed as they work, so they need replacing. Just as important is what you take out: rubber bands, cardboard gift boxes, and wool or felt pouches.
Start with the things that cost nothing, because they do most of the work.
- Take the offenders out. The conservation sheet above names them directly: rubber products, cardboard and paper, PVC plastics, and "protein based materials such as wool, felt, silk and leather" — all of which contain or release sulfur compounds harmful to silver. A rubber band looped around a stack of bangles is the fastest way to print a black stripe on them. The little cardboard gift boxes you kept "just in case" are quietly gassing off in the same drawer.
- Wipe before you put it away, not after. The same source is direct about skin: salts and grease from fingertips are corrosive to metal, and fingerprints left long enough etch in permanently. Ten seconds with a soft dry cloth at the end of the day removes the day's residue.
- Get it out of the bathroom. Humidity, condensation and temperature swings all sit above the 50% line during a shower. A bedroom drawer on an interior wall is better than any bathroom cabinet.
- Do not let different metals rest against each other. Separate compartments are not fussiness; contact is where the reaction concentrates.

Now picture the typical jewelry box at a typical price: a paperboard or MDF carcass, a lot of adhesive holding it together, wrapped in wool felt. That is three items from the warning list, assembled into a lid that closes. The advice "store your silver in a lined box" is not wrong so much as incomplete — it assumes the box is inert, and most are not.
Does wood make jewelry tarnish?
Composite wood panels are the flagged risk, not lumber: conservation guidance names plywood, chipboard and composite products for their formaldehyde, and does not list solid wood. We have no species-level test data of our own, so we make no claim that walnut itself slows tarnish. What a solid box does is keep pieces separated, and out of dust and light.
Every piece we stock is solid black walnut. There is no plywood, chipboard or MDF core, which means no panel of glued chips running the full area of the box.
