A Christmas tree that still works in January.

Most wooden Christmas decorations do one thing for four weeks and then live in a box. This one comes apart: the tree is three six-petal trivets stacked on a turned stand under a star. Through December it sits out as a tree. The rest of the year the three pieces lie flat under a teapot, a casserole or a hot pan.

Five pieces, no screws

Each layer is one piece of solid wood cut into six petals, with a hole in the middle that drops straight over the turned trunk. Nothing screws together, nothing is glued and there is no hardware to lose in the box.

The petals are solid wood with air gaps between them, so heat has somewhere to go instead of sitting against the tabletop. Use the 200 mm layers under a casserole or a teapot and the 160 mm maple one under a mug.
